The events in the film are based on a tragic and hopeful period in Lithuanian history when a resistance movement was opposing the Soviet invasion. The film tells the story of the famous Lithuanian partisan Juozas Lukša-Daumantas and his family. Juozas Lukša fought for Lithuanian independence both in his own country and in the West. There he met his only love Nijolė, but returned to Lithuania to continue his struggle and did not live a personal life. Two of his brothers were killed by the Soviets, two were deported to Siberia. His father prostrated by the fate of his sons lost his mind. Soviet secret services killed Juozas Lukša when he was only thirty.
