Rytis Kurkulis was born in 1974 in Vilnius. In 1998, he graduated the Lithuanian Academy of Music, where he studied in the Camera Department of the Faculty of Cinema and Theater. In 2004, he studied directing of photography at ESCAC, the University of Barcelona, where he received the degree in directing of photography.

He worked as a camera assistant in the shooting of the feature films: „Vilko dantų karoliai” (“Wolf Teeth Necklace”) directed by Algimantas Puipa, camera operator Viktoras Radzevičius;
"K+M+B" directed by Romas Lileikis, camera operator Viktoras Radzevičius.
He worked as a gaffer in „Elzė iš Gilijos " (“Elze's Life”) directed by Algimantas Puipa, camera operator Viktoras Radzevičius.

Most recently, Kurkulis has been working in cooperation with a number of Lithuanian film and video studios and production companies. In 2000-2001, he filmed a series of documentaries in Spain, Turkey, England, and Egypt. The project was done in cooperation with the studio “A Propos”, the journalist Algimantas Čekuolis, and the director Eimantas Belickas.
In 2000, he filmed a video installation for Lithuanian exposition of the World Fair EXPO 2000 in Hannover (“A Propos” studio). Rytis Kurkulis is an author of many commercials and music videos, a founder, member, and promoter of the Lithuanian Association of Cinematographers ( www.lac.lt ), a member of the Federation of the European Associations of Cinematographers (IMAGO).
