Restoration and digitization of national cinema archives is one of the activities typical for the world's cinematheques.   The media education and research centre "Meno Avilys" has been engaged in it for a decade. Part of the organization's, operating at A. Goštauto st. 2, Vilnius, collection has been restored, digitized and available on Sinemateka.lt website.

Here you can watch Lithuanian documentaries, the works of our country's early video artists, and curated programs for free. The viewing experience is enhanced by interviews with creators of moving images.

In the video art section of Sinemateka.lt, you can familiarize yourself with the works of Gintaras Šeputis, Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas, Laima Kiškūnė, Eglė Rakauskaitė, Evaldas Jansas, Aurelija Maknytė and other video artists who created moving images in 1980’s – 1990’s.

According to one of Sinemateka.lt content curators, artist and director Gerda Paliušytė, the video art section is created by selecting and digitizing, restoring the works of artists who influenced the development of Lithuanian art, with the goal of preserving and reintroducing them in today's contexts.

"The works presented to the viewers of Sinemateka.lt are important because of their mark in the history of art and their enduring aesthetic and conceptual value. I would recommend exploring the early video art section for those who are interested in low-fi poetry created with minimal means, and for those who are interested in the technological quests of the 1980s and their material expression, which today has acquired a dreamy, sometimes even a psychedelic form", says G. Paliušytė.
